The Queen of Deccans, Oxford in the east, and the cultural center of Maharashtra, Pune is a city of the future that promises to be as interesting as its history. |
A long-standing fortress of the Maratha Empire and home to the legendary Raje Shree Chatrapati Shivaji maharaj , the Pune district features a magnificent land and sea fort that is a testament to its glorious past. |
After Shree Chatrapati Shivaji maharaj, in the early 18th century, the Marathi family Peshwa, who grew from a court minister to a major political power in the coming decades, emerged. However, after the Battle of Panipat in 1761, the Maratha Empire began to decline, and in 1818 Pune was acquired by the East India Company. |

Today, Pune is the center of traditional Marathi culture and is proud of its education, arts and crafts and theater. There is one of the oldest universities in India, many of which attract both Indians and international students. That's why it's probably called Eastern Oxford. |
Pune is slowly becoming an international city and is now an important commercial center. The narrow winding roads of old Pune make a wonderful difference to the open and spacious new city. However, Pune retains the charm of the Old World and many of its quaint features, including ubiquitous cyclists, rickshaws, and the very seriously taken daily siesta hours. |
